Business Story
A normal production flow will consume components, post labor, post subcontractor tasks, and finally output to the inventory. There could be a reason to abruptly stop production, maybe the customer has cancelled or changed his order, the quality is not good,…
Already posted entries can be reversed by posting manually created negative journal lines.
When there is at least one item produced, all remaining costs will be assigned to the produced items.
When no output is created, only costs, there is a constraint: Nav does not allow to close a production order without output!
Solution:
- Post the smallest possible quantity as output to a scrap location
- Post a negative item journal to set the stock to zero and post the costs as a loss
This change is to create a Reverse Kitting Journal, opposite to the Production Journal, where all posted consumption and output is posted with negative quantities.
Standard MS Dynamics Nav Solution
MS Dynamics Nav allows posting to a production order:
- Consumption journal to post raw materials and semi-finished products
- Output journal to post Consumption of labor
- Output journal to post finished quantities
- Production journal to combine all postings
The production journal opens, some quantity is posted as output, and material consumption.
This could be manually reversed with the same journal.
When trying to finish the production order. An error occurs, even if all postings lead to a zero result: Production Order xxxxxxx has not been finished.Some output is still missing. Do you still want to finish the order?
Solution:
Post an output of 1 (or the smallest possible), and scrap it with a negative item journal. A good practice would be to create a separate, non-nettable, location to store scrapped inventory.
The post calculation of the production order will show a variance of 100% because a quantity was produced but all costs are reversed.

All postings will be shown with negative quantities, the journal can be edited.
